How Mead Johnson Scaled Consumer Engagement Across Malaysia and Singapore with WhatsApp

For brands serving parents, communication is never just about promotions. It is about providing the right information, at the right time, through the right channel. As one of the world’s leading nutrition companies, Mead Johnson Nutrition supports families throughout every stage of the parenting journey, from pregnancy through early childhood. Among its portfolio of trusted brands is Enfagrow, a scientifically formulated growing-up milk brand designed to support children’s development through tailored nutrition.

Over the years, Enfagrow has built strong relationships with parents across Malaysia and Singapore by combining nutritional expertise with educational resources and parenting support. However, as consumer behaviour evolved and digital channels became increasingly crowded, reaching parents in meaningful ways became more challenging.

To strengthen engagement across both markets, Mead Johnson Nutrition partnered with Omnichat to transform WhatsApp into a scalable communication channel that could support consumer education, lead generation, customer service, promotions, and loyalty initiatives. The result was a more connected customer journey that delivered a 3.5x uplift in open rates, a 2.8x increase in engagement, and valuable new opportunities to enrich first-party customer data for future marketing efforts.

Meeting Parents Where They Already Are

Parents today are more connected than ever before. They consume content on mobile devices, seek recommendations through social platforms, and increasingly rely on online communities and peer reviews when making decisions for their families.

According to Adrienne Low, Head of Integrated Media & CRM for Malaysia and Singapore at Mead Johnson Nutrition, the team re-evaluated whether traditional communication channels still delivered the same level of engagement they once did.

“We knew we needed a solution that could scale across both Malaysia and Singapore while helping us engage consumers in a more meaningful way. The challenge was no longer about sending more messages. It was about making every interaction count.” The team reviewed its existing communication ecosystem and identified several limitations.

Email remained an important channel for delivering educational content and lifecycle communications to parents. However, open rates and click-through rates gradually declined as inboxes became more crowded. Many parents simply were not opening emails as frequently as before.

SMS campaigns, while useful for event reminders and promotional notifications, lacked the interactivity required to create deeper engagement. Phone calls were becoming increasingly difficult to scale because answer rates were declining and concerns about scam calls were growing. Meanwhile, maintaining a dedicated mobile app required continuous investment and resources to sustain user adoption.

As a result, the team began looking for a new communication channel that could provide instant engagement, support personalised conversations, deliver rich content experiences, and scale efficiently across both markets.

Turning WhatsApp into a Strategic Engagement Channel

When evaluating potential solutions, WhatsApp emerged as a natural choice. Already deeply embedded in the daily lives of consumers across Malaysia and Singapore, WhatsApp offered a familiar environment where parents actively engaged with friends, family, and, increasingly, businesses. Unlike traditional channels, messages were seen almost instantly, creating opportunities for more timely and meaningful interactions.

More importantly, WhatsApp offered the capabilities the team was looking for: centralised communication, automated workflows, rich media support, and the flexibility to support multiple customer engagement objectives through a single channel. Rather than launching a single campaign, Mead Johnson Nutrition adopted a test-and-learn approach to understand how WhatsApp could support different stages of the parent journey.

“We wanted a platform that could help us engage consumers throughout their journey, not just at a single point in time. WhatsApp gave us the flexibility to do that while keeping the experience simple and convenient for parents,” said Adrienne.

Creating Meaningful Conversations Throughout the Parent Journey

Working with Omnichat, Enfagrow gradually expanded its WhatsApp initiatives across several key touchpoints.

Educational content and parenting tips became an important part of the strategy, allowing the brand to deliver relevant information tailored to parents’ needs and life stages. Instead of communicating only during promotional periods, Enfagrow focused on delivering ongoing value through useful, timely content. The team also introduced WhatsApp-powered sampling campaigns, enabling parents to register for product samples directly through chat. The experience removed unnecessary steps, making it easier for consumers to participate while helping the brand collect valuable first-party customer data.

Each interaction generated insights into customer preferences and behaviour, enabling more relevant and personalised future communications. The team also integrated promotional campaigns into the WhatsApp journey, giving them a more effective way to share offers and product updates with engaged audiences. At the same time, the team could manage customer service interactions, membership programs, and loyalty initiatives within the same channel.

By bringing these touchpoints together, Enfagrow created a more connected experience across awareness, consideration, conversion, and retention.

Building a More Complete View of the Consumer

One of the initiative’s biggest advantages extended beyond engagement metrics.

Through Omnichat, the team could consolidate customer interactions, behavioural insights, and engagement history into a single platform. This enabled the team to better understand consumer interests, build more targeted audience segments, and improve future retargeting efforts.

Instead of relying on fragmented data from multiple channels, the marketing team gained a clearer view of how consumers engaged with the brand throughout their journey.

“What attracted us to WhatsApp was its ability to support both engagement and data enrichment at the same time. Every interaction helped us better understand our consumers and create more relevant experiences for them,” said Adrienne. The unified approach also improved operational efficiency, allowing customer-facing teams to manage conversations more effectively while maintaining a consistent brand experience.

Delivering Stronger Engagement at Scale

The initiative’s impact was clear. Compared to previous communication approaches, Enfagrow achieved a 3.5x uplift in open rates and a 2.8x increase in engagement, demonstrating the effectiveness of conversational messaging in reaching and engaging modern consumers.

Beyond campaign performance, the initiative created new audience cohorts for future retargeting and personalisation, laying the foundation for stronger long-term customer relationships.

Most importantly, WhatsApp gave the team a scalable framework for engaging parents through personalised, real-time conversations across multiple stages of the customer journey. Looking ahead, Mead Johnson Nutrition plans to continue expanding its conversational engagement strategy through smarter customer journeys, gamification initiatives, and enhanced customer service experiences.

For Adrienne and her team, the direction is clear.

“Messaging is becoming an increasingly important part of how brands engage consumers. The ability to deliver personalised, real-time communication at scale will be a key differentiator for brands moving forward.”

Today, WhatsApp has evolved from a simple messaging platform into a strategic engagement channel for Enfagrow, helping the brand connect with parents through timely, relevant, and meaningful conversations. By combining valuable content, personalised engagement, and a seamless customer experience, Enfagrow is building stronger relationships with families across Malaysia and Singapore while laying the foundation for long-term growth.
